Hazelwood is Eku's seed project and the first retired coal-fired power station to host a battery energy storage system in Australia.

Coal-fired to battery-powered. This phrase encapsulates the historic significance of the Hazelwood Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the Latrobe Valley of Victoria, Australia. Hazelwood BESS represents a key moment in repurposing former thermal assets for renewable energy technologies.

The 150 MW / 150 MWh BESS was jointly funded and developed by ENGIE and Eku Energy. Fluence supplies, operates, and maintains the facility for the partnership, which plays a critical role in increasing renewable energy capacity in Victoria while delivering essential system services to the grid.

As of late January 2026, Hazelwood BESS is 100% owned by ENEGIE as Eku decided to divest of our 30% stake in the project to pursue a portfolio of majority owned and operated assets.

Current Status
1.Projektentwicklung (Development)

Der Standort wird ausgewählt und wir treten frühzeitig in den Austausch mit der lokalen Bevölkerung um das Projekt vorzustellen und Feedback einzuholen. Parallel dazu werden alle erforderlichen Studien erstellt und zur Erlangung der Baugenehmigung bei den zuständigen Behörden und Gremien eingereicht.

2. Vorbereitungsphase und Finanzierungsabschluss

Nach Erhalt der Baugenehmigung verhandeln wir Verträge mit Lieferanten und Abnehmern und sichern die Finanzierung des Projekts im Vorfeld des Financial Close.

3. Bauphase

Mit dem ersten Spatenstich beginnen die Bauarbeiten vor Ort und die Umsetzung des Projekts startet.

4. Betriebsphase

Das BESS ist nun in Betrieb und stellt zusätzliche Speicherkapazität für das Stromnetz bereit. Der Betrieb wird durch ein Expertenteam gesteuert, um eine sichere und zuverlässige Leistung sicherzustellen.

Current Status
5. Stilllegung

Nach einer geplanten Betriebsdauer von über 20 Jahren wird das BESS zurückgebaut und der Standort entsprechend wiederhergestellt.
