Griffith BESS is a proposed 100MW / 800 MWh grid-connected battery energy storage system near Yoogali in the Griffith City Council, NSW.

It is a project of state significance, having been awarded a NSW Long Duration Storage Long-Term Energy Service Agreement (LDS LTESA) from AEMO Services in February 2025. The LDS LTESA agreement represents an important milestone for Eku Energy’s Griffith BESS, which will provide an eight-hour duration storage capacity to store excess renewable energy and dispatch it during periods of high demand. When it is operational, the BESS will balance supply and demand, reduce energy price volatility, and contribute to the stability of the electricity grid in the National Electricity Market (NEM).

Once in operation it will connect to the Griffith Substation within Transgrid’s transmission network. The project is uniquely positioned within a part of the network that already hosts existing solar generation including the Griffith Solar Farm (36MW) and  Darlington Point Solar Farm (275MW). Its location will support excess renewable electricity generated by solar farms from being curtailed, or ‘switched off’, due to local network constraints. This supports more cost-effective renewable electricity making its way to NSW energy consumers.

Griffith BESS will accommodate grid-forming inverter technology to provide essential system services like voltage support and reactive power to support network stability as NSW thermal units retire at end of life.

Griffith BESS is anticipated to be in operations in 2028. The project is currently subject to planning approvals from the NSW Government. Details of the application can be found here. We are keen to receive feedback from local residents and the community about the project.

Current Status
1.Projektentwicklung (Development)

Der Standort wird ausgewählt und wir treten frühzeitig in den Austausch mit der lokalen Bevölkerung um das Projekt vorzustellen und Feedback einzuholen. Parallel dazu werden alle erforderlichen Studien erstellt und zur Erlangung der Baugenehmigung bei den zuständigen Behörden und Gremien eingereicht.

2. Vorbereitungsphase und Finanzierungsabschluss

Nach Erhalt der Baugenehmigung verhandeln wir Verträge mit Lieferanten und Abnehmern und sichern die Finanzierung des Projekts im Vorfeld des Financial Close.

3. Bauphase

Mit dem ersten Spatenstich beginnen die Bauarbeiten vor Ort und die Umsetzung des Projekts startet.

4. Betriebsphase

Das BESS ist nun in Betrieb und stellt zusätzliche Speicherkapazität für das Stromnetz bereit. Der Betrieb wird durch ein Expertenteam gesteuert, um eine sichere und zuverlässige Leistung sicherzustellen.

5. Stilllegung

Nach einer geplanten Betriebsdauer von über 20 Jahren wird das BESS zurückgebaut und der Standort entsprechend wiederhergestellt.

Social Licence Commitments

These Social Licence Commitments (SLCs) reflect our commitment to delivering lasting benefits to local communities, First Nations people, and regional economies while supporting the clean energy transition. They form part of the project’s obligations under the Long-Term Energy Service Agreement (LTESA) awarded through the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap.

Shared Community Benefits Commitments

  • During construction: We are committing $200,000 to support local community initiatives and projects during the construction phase, helping build lasting benefits in the region.
  • During operations: We will provide $30,000 annually for the initial seven years of the project to continue supporting local programs that strengthen community wellbeing and resilience.

First Nations People Commitments

Total commitment: Equivalent to 1.5% of the total project value.

  • During construction: We will subcontract project works to First Nations-owned businesses, targeting an aggregate contract value of at least 1.38%. Additionally, we are investing $15,000 in cultural awareness training and services to promote respect and understanding.
  • During operations: We will contribute $500,000 towards First Nations training and workforce development to support long-term employment pathways and skills development.

Commitments to Local Employment

  • During construction: We are investing $150,000 to enhance local employment and workforce capability. Furthermore, we will ensure minimum workforce participation of Learning Workers (10%), Apprentices (8.3%), and Underrepresented Groups (5%) to foster inclusive workforce development.
  • During operations: Over the first 7 years of the project, we will invest at least $100,000 in local supply chains or local innovators, supporting the region's ongoing economic development and innovation.

Commitments Related to Use of Local Content

  • During construction: We will source at least 32.2% of project inputs from Australian suppliers and will ensure that a minimum of 10% of all steel used is procured from local steel manufacturers.
  • During operations: We are committed to maintaining a high level of Australian participation, with at least 35.2% of operational expenditure directed to local content.
