As the first event in the country dedicated specifically to the long-term management of battery energy storage systems (BESS), the Battery Asset Management Summit underscored a growing recognition: commissioning a project is only the beginning of its journey. The real challenge and opportunity lies in how these assets are operated, maintained, and optimised over their life.

The discussions throughout the Summit revealed a sector defined by innovation, adaptability, and a collaborative mindset. From technical fundamentals to safety imperatives, participants demonstrated the depth of expertise and the forward-thinking approach required to steward this rapidly evolving industry.

Eku Energy was represented by two of our leaders contributing to key themes shaping the future of asset management:

  • Asset Management Fundamentals and Grid-Forming Technologies: Cam Tomkins, Asset Management Lead, explored the foundations of effective asset management for BESS, and examined how grid-forming technologies will become central to ensuring system stability and reliability as renewable penetration increases.
  • The Primacy of Health and Safety: Cass Abbley, Global WHSE & Risk Manager, reinforced that safety remains non-negotiable. In her session, she outlined how comprehensive WHSE frameworks underpin not only the protection of people and communities, but also the resilience and longevity of storage assets.

The Summit clearly demonstrated that Australia’s BESS sector is entering a new phase. Success will not only be measured by the megawatts delivered or the speed of deployment, but also by the industry’s ability to implement robust asset management strategies, integrate advanced technologies and uphold the highest standards of safety and risk management.

At Eku Energy, we see these dimensions as essential to delivering the full value of storage to ensure that our assets remain reliable, safe, and adaptable to the dynamic needs of the grid and the communities we serve. As this new chapter unfolds, we remain committed to advancing best practice in BESS asset management and contributing to the sustainable growth of the sector over the long-term.
