Williamsdale BESS

The Big Canberra Battery.

Williamsdale BESS will reduce reliance on fossil fuels and create a cleaner, greener, more sustainable Canberra.

Project overview

Eku Energy has partnered with the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government to deliver a 250 MW / 500 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).

Located at Williamsdale in the south of Canberra, the battery will store enough renewable energy to power one-third of Canberra for two hours during peak demand periods, increasing energy security and reliability for Canberrans.

The Williamsdale BESS is part of the ACT Government’s Big Canberra Battery project. It further supports Canberra households in their use of renewable energy and the ACT Government’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2045.

The Williamsdale BESS will provide a range of energy and essential system security services, particularly during the summer season when the electricity grid can come under stress. It can also provide fast acting frequency control services in just a few milliseconds to support the grid and minimise risks of disturbances. Wlliamdale BESS is expected to be in operation in early 2026.

Community Grants Program

Williamsdale BESS is proud to support local community groups who are part of building strong, thriving societies across the Territory. We are committed to working in partnership with the community to help identify and support initiatives that can deliver long-term benefits for residents, community members and broader society. We want to ensure that those communities hosting our projects have a share in the benefits that they deliver. We therefore established the Eku Community Grants Program for Williamsdale BESS. Under this program, a range of financial grants will be available in 2025-2026 for not-for-profit organisations to deliver community projects that deliver broad reach across the ACT community. The amount of grant funding will vary from project to project.
